Cylinder Faults — Diagnosed and Fixed Properly

A hot water cylinder is a sealed, often pressurised vessel under significant thermal and mechanical stress. When something fails — a leaking PRV, a failed thermostat, a tripped immersion or weeping joint — it needs a competent G3 qualified engineer, not a generalist plumber.

We diagnose and repair vented and unvented cylinders of every major brand: Megaflo, Joule, Telford, Heatrae Sadia, OSO and others. Most faults are repaired on the first visit; the few that need parts (a specific brand's PRV or thermostat) are usually resolved within 48 hours.

Statutory annual servicing of unvented cylinders is also available — required by G3 to maintain manufacturer warranty and ensure ongoing safety.

Common Cylinder Faults Worth Acting On

Cylinder faults can range from inconvenient (no hot water from one tap) to genuinely dangerous (a failed PRV on an unvented cylinder can, in extreme cases, lead to vessel failure). Don't ignore the warning signs.

    • A constantly discharging PRV on an unvented cylinder indicates excess pressure or a failed expansion vessel
    • Knocking or banging from the cylinder usually means the immersion element is scaled or the anode is exhausted
    • Brown or rusty hot water indicates internal corrosion — the cylinder may be near failure
    • Hot water that runs out quickly when it used to last suggests immersion or thermostat failure
    • Leaks from cylinder joints usually mean failed gaskets, not necessarily a failed cylinder

    Our Process

    1

    Diagnose

Full inspection — pressure, temperature, expansion vessel charge, anode condition, immersion element resistance, thermostat function.

    2

    Quote

Clear fixed-price quote for the repair. Replacement quoted alongside if the cylinder is near end-of-life.

    3

    Isolate Safely

Cylinder isolated, depressurised and drained safely. Mains, expansion vessel and immersions all properly handled.

    4

    Repair

Failed component swapped (PRV, expansion vessel, anode, immersion, thermostat) for manufacturer or equivalent specification.

    5

    Recommission

Cylinder refilled, vented, pressure-tested, temperature-checked. Discharge pipe tested. Full demonstration to you.

    Why Choose Conroy

    G3 Qualified

Unvented cylinder work legally requires G3 — we're qualified, registered and competent. Don't use anyone who isn't.

    All Major Brands

Megaflo, Joule, Telford, Heatrae Sadia, OSO, Range — all repaired with the right parts.

    Repair, Don't Replace

Most cylinder faults are a £100-200 part, not a £1,500 new cylinder. We'll always quote both.

    Annual Servicing

Statutory G3 annual service available — required to maintain warranty and ensure safety.

    Same-Day Where Possible

Many faults diagnosed and repaired on the first visit with parts carried on board.

    Workmanship Guarantee

All cylinder repairs guaranteed on the workmanship we carry out.

    Technical Detail

    The Pressure Relief Valve

The PRV vents excess pressure to a tundish and discharge pipe outside. A constantly weeping PRV means either the valve itself has failed (replace it) or the expansion vessel has lost its charge (re-pressurise or replace).

    Expansion Vessel Maintenance

Unvented cylinders need an expansion vessel to absorb the thermal expansion of hot water. The internal air bladder loses charge over time (typically every 3-5 years) and needs re-pressurising or replacing — a standard part of annual servicing.

    Sacrificial Anode

The anode is a magnesium or aluminium rod inside the cylinder that corrodes preferentially to protect the steel vessel. Once exhausted (typically 5-10 years), the cylinder itself starts corroding. Anode replacement at service significantly extends cylinder life.

    Immersion Heater Failure

Immersion elements scale up in hard water areas and eventually fail. Replacement is typically a 30-45 minute job once the cylinder is drained. We carry common sizes for same-day fitting.

    When to Replace, Not Repair

Internal corrosion (rusty water), pinhole leaks from the cylinder body, repeated component failures, or a cylinder over 15 years old usually mean replacement is the right call. We'll always be honest about which side of the line your cylinder is on.
