Making Renewable Heating Work for Your Home
The way we heat our homes is changing. Rising gas prices, tightening regulations, and the UK's commitment to net zero mean that renewable heating systems are no longer a niche choice — they're becoming the standard. The question isn't whether to switch, but when.
At Conroy Plumbing & Heating, we bring over 25 years of heating system expertise to every renewable installation. We understand how heating systems work from the ground up — radiators, pipework, controls, and heat distribution — which means we design renewable systems that actually perform in real homes, not just on paper.
We advise on and install air source heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and hybrid heating solutions. We'll assess your property honestly, tell you what will work and what won't, and design a system that delivers genuine savings without compromising your comfort.
We work across Bolton, Manchester, and the wider North West, helping homeowners navigate the transition to low-carbon heating with practical, no-nonsense guidance.
Why Sticking with an Old Gas Boiler Costs You More Every Year
Gas prices have increased by over 150% in the last five years. An ageing gas boiler running at 80% efficiency is burning money every hour it operates. Meanwhile, air source heat pumps deliver 3-4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed, making them significantly cheaper to run.
From 2035, new gas boiler installations in UK homes will be banned. Properties without low-carbon heating will face reduced resale values and higher running costs. Acting now means you benefit from current government grants and avoid the rush as the deadline approaches.
- A 15-year-old boiler wastes 15-25% of the gas it burns — that's hundreds of pounds per year
- The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 towards heat pump installations — but funding is limited
- Properties with renewable heating systems sell for 5-10% more than comparable gas-heated homes
- Gas prices are projected to keep rising as the UK reduces its dependency on fossil fuels
- Waiting until 2035 means competing with millions of homeowners all trying to switch at once
Our Renewable Heating Installation Process

Our experienced team installs your system to manufacturer specifications and industry best practice. We minimise disruption and keep you informed throughout.
Commissioning & Handover
Every system is fully commissioned, tested, and optimised. We walk you through the controls and provide comprehensive documentation including warranty details.
Benefits of Switching to Renewable Heating
Lower Energy Bills
Heat pumps are 300-400% efficient. For every £1 of electricity consumed, you get £3-£4 of heat. Most households save 30-50% on heating costs.
Government Grants
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 towards air source heat pump installations, significantly reducing your upfront investment.
Increased Property Value
Homes with renewable heating achieve higher EPC ratings and sell for more. Buyers increasingly prioritise energy efficiency.
Reduced Carbon Footprint
Cut your home's carbon emissions by up to 70%. As the electricity grid gets greener, your savings increase automatically.
25+ Years Heating Expertise
We understand heating systems inside out. Your renewable system is designed by someone who knows how heat distribution actually works.
Future-Proof Investment
With gas boilers being phased out by 2035, installing renewable heating now protects you from future regulatory changes and price rises.
Renewable Heating Technologies We Install
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air — even at temperatures as low as -15°C — and use it to heat your home and hot water. Modern ASHPs achieve a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.0-4.5, meaning they produce 3-4.5 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity consumed. We install units from leading manufacturers including Vaillant, Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Samsung. Every installation includes a full heat loss survey, correct unit sizing, and integration with your existing or upgraded radiator system.
Solar Thermal Systems
Solar thermal panels use the sun's energy to heat your domestic hot water. A correctly sized system can provide 50-70% of your annual hot water needs, significantly reducing your energy consumption. We install both flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, integrated with your existing hot water cylinder. Solar thermal works well alongside heat pumps or as a standalone addition to a conventional boiler system.
Hybrid Heating Systems
Not every property is suitable for a full heat pump installation — particularly older, poorly insulated homes. In these cases, a hybrid system combining a small heat pump with a gas boiler can be the ideal solution. The heat pump handles the majority of heating demand during milder weather, while the boiler provides backup during the coldest periods. This approach delivers significant carbon and cost savings without requiring major insulation upgrades.
Radiator Upgrades for Heat Pumps
Heat pumps operate most efficiently at lower flow temperatures (35-45°C) compared to gas boilers (60-70°C). This means some existing radiators may need upsizing to deliver the same heat output. We carry out a full radiator assessment during our survey and only recommend upgrades where genuinely necessary. In many cases, modern double-panel radiators are already adequately sized. Where upgrades are needed, we install energy-efficient aluminium or steel radiators.
Hot Water Cylinders for Renewable Systems
Most renewable heating systems require a hot water cylinder with a dedicated heat pump coil. We install unvented and vented cylinders from manufacturers including Joule, Telford, and Megaflo, sized correctly for your household's hot water demand. Cylinder sizing is critical — too small and you run out of hot water; too large and you waste energy heating water you don't use.
Smart Controls & Zoning
Renewable heating systems benefit enormously from intelligent controls. We install weather-compensating controls that automatically adjust the heat pump's output based on outdoor temperature, maximising efficiency. We also set up zoning systems that allow you to heat different areas of your home independently, reducing waste and improving comfort. Smart thermostats compatible with heat pumps give you full control from your phone.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Explained
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a £7,500 grant towards the cost of an air source heat pump installation (or £6,000 for ground source heat pumps). To qualify, your property must have an existing fossil fuel heating system, a valid EPC, and adequate insulation. The grant is applied directly to the installation cost — you don't need to pay it upfront and claim it back. We handle the entire application process for you as part of our service.
