What Does a Central Heating Installation Involve?

A full central heating installation covers the complete system: boiler, radiators, pipework, controls, and any associated components such as cylinders, pumps, and valves. It is the most significant plumbing and heating investment in your home, and it needs to be done right.

Every property is different. A Victorian terrace in Bolton has completely different heating demands to a modern semi in Bury. Room sizes, ceiling heights, insulation levels, window types, and the number of external walls all affect how much heat each room needs. A system designed without accounting for these factors will either overheat some rooms and underheat others, or waste energy cycling on and off inefficiently.

At Conroy Plumbing & Heating, we start every installation with a proper heat-loss calculation. We measure each room, assess the thermal characteristics of the property, and design a system that delivers even, comfortable warmth throughout your home. Every radiator is sized to match its room, every pipe run is calculated for flow rate, and the boiler is matched to the total system demand.

We handle the entire project from design through to commissioning. You deal with one team throughout — no subcontractors, no handoffs, and no finger-pointing if something needs attention.

The Problem with Poorly Designed Heating Systems

A heating system installed cheaply or without proper design creates problems you live with for decades. Cold spots in bedrooms, overheated hallways, slow warm-up times, noisy pipework, and high energy bills are all symptoms of poor system design — not something you should accept as normal.

Retrofitting corrections to a badly designed system is expensive and disruptive. Moving radiators, replacing undersized pipework, or adding zones to an existing system often costs more than doing it properly the first time.

    • Undersized radiators leave rooms cold no matter how long the heating runs
    • Oversized boilers short-cycle, reducing lifespan and increasing gas consumption by 10-15%
    • Incorrectly routed pipework creates water hammer, air locks, and uneven heat distribution
    • Missing thermostatic radiator valves mean no room-by-room temperature control
    • Single-zone systems heat the entire house when you only need warmth in one area
    • Poor system design increases your carbon footprint unnecessarily

    Our Installation Process

    1

    Free Survey & Design

We visit your property, measure every room, assess insulation and glazing, and produce a full heat-loss calculation. From this, we design a system with correctly sized radiators, properly routed pipework, and the right boiler.

    2

    Detailed Quotation

You receive a comprehensive written quote listing every component: boiler make and model, radiator sizes and positions, pipework specification, controls, and all labour. Fixed price, no surprises.

    3

    Installation

Our team fits the complete system — boiler, radiators, pipework, valves, controls, and any ancillary components. We protect your floors and furniture throughout, and clean up at the end of each day.

    4

    System Flush & Fill

Before commissioning, we flush the entire system to remove installation debris, fill with treated water, and add inhibitor to protect against corrosion and sludge build-up.

    5

    Commissioning & Handover

We commission the boiler, balance all radiators for even heat distribution, programme the controls, and walk you through the system. All warranties are registered and Building Regulations notification is submitted.

Why Choose Conroy for Your Heating Installation

    Properly Designed Systems

Every system starts with a heat-loss calculation. Your radiators, boiler, and pipework are matched to your property's actual requirements — not estimated.

    Single Team Throughout

Phil and his team handle the project from survey to commissioning. No subcontractors, no miscommunication, no delays.

    Minimal Disruption

We plan the installation to minimise impact on your daily life. Floors and furniture are protected. We clean up every day.

    Energy Efficient

A correctly designed system with TRVs and modern controls lets you heat only the rooms you use, cutting waste and lowering bills.

    Full Guarantee

Our installations come with a guarantee on parts and labour, plus the boiler manufacturer's warranty — giving you complete protection.

    Building Regs Handled

We notify Building Control, provide compliance certificates, and ensure everything meets current regulations.

    Central Heating Installation: Complete Guide

    Heat-Loss Calculations Explained

A heat-loss calculation determines exactly how much heat each room needs to reach a comfortable temperature on the coldest days. We factor in room dimensions, wall construction, insulation levels, window type and size, floor type, ceiling height, and the room's aspect. The result tells us what size radiator each room needs and what total output the boiler must deliver. This is the foundation of a well-designed system.

    Radiator Sizing and Positioning

Radiators should be positioned under windows where possible — the rising warm air counteracts the cold draught from the glass. Each radiator is sized to match the room's calculated heat loss. We use double-panel convector radiators for rooms with high heat demand and single-panel or compact models where space is limited. Every radiator is fitted with a thermostatic radiator valve for individual room control.

    Pipework Materials and Routing

We use 15mm and 22mm copper pipework for the main distribution, with plastic push-fit in areas where flexibility or ease of routing is advantageous. Pipe runs are planned to minimise visual impact and avoid future access problems. Where pipework runs under floors, we clip and insulate properly to prevent noise transmission and heat loss.

    Zoning and Controls

For larger properties or homes with different usage patterns (e.g. bedrooms only heated in the evening), we install zone valves and a multi-channel programmer. This allows independent temperature control for different areas — heating the living space during the day and bedrooms at night without wasting energy on unoccupied rooms.

    Underfloor Heating Integration

If you are considering underfloor heating for specific areas (kitchen extensions, bathrooms), we can design a hybrid system that combines radiators in existing rooms with underfloor heating in new spaces. The two systems work together through the same boiler, managed by a single control system.
