Waste Disposal Units — Fitted Properly, Plumbed Neatly

A waste disposal unit (food waste disposer) bolts to the underside of your kitchen sink and grinds food scraps into a slurry that's washed away through the existing waste pipework. Fitted properly, they're transparent in daily use and significantly reduce kitchen bin trips.

Installation involves swapping the sink waste flange for a disposal-compatible mount, fitting the unit, reconfiguring the trap and waste run (often relocating the dishwasher connection), and either wiring to a switched fused spur or fitting an air switch through the worktop.

We also repair existing units — jammed grinding chambers, failed motor capacitors, leaking gaskets and damaged splash baffles — without immediately defaulting to full replacement.

    Common Waste Disposal Problems

Most waste disposal complaints — leaks, smells, jamming, weak grinding — come down to poor original installation rather than faulty units. A leaking gasket, a misaligned mounting flange, or a waste pipe with the wrong fall will all cause trouble within months of fitting.

    • Leaks from the sink flange usually mean the original installer skipped the plumber's putty
    • Smells from the unit usually mean the splash baffle is worn or the chamber needs cleaning
    • Jammed units can almost always be freed with the supplied hex key — no need to scrap the unit
    • Failed motors are usually a £25 capacitor, not a £200 replacement
    • Wrong-spec units (continuous-feed vs batch-feed) cause ongoing frustration

    Technical Detail

    Continuous vs Batch Feed

Continuous-feed units run while water flows — fast and convenient. Batch-feed units only run when a cover is locked in place — safer in households with young children but slower in use. We'll recommend based on your usage.

    Power Ratings

Domestic units range from 0.5 to 1.0 horsepower. Higher HP grinds tougher waste (small bones, fruit pits, fibrous vegetables) and lasts longer. We typically recommend 0.75 HP minimum for a family kitchen.

    Air Switches

An air switch is a low-profile button on the worktop that controls the unit via a pneumatic line — no exposed switch on the wall, no fused spur in the cupboard. Adds about an hour to the install but looks far neater.

    Electrical Supply

Most units need a switched fused spur or air-switch wiring. We carry out the plumbing and air-switch fitting; new dedicated electrical circuits are arranged through our trusted local electrician partner.

What Can and Can't Go In

Most food waste is fine. Avoid: bones (other than small chicken), fruit pits, large amounts of pasta or rice, fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks), grease and oil. Manufacturer guidance varies — we'll walk you through your specific unit.
