What TRVs Do — and Why They Need Replacing

TRVs control the temperature of each room individually by reducing the flow of hot water into the radiator when the room reaches the set temperature. They're one of the biggest energy-saving fittings in any heating system — but only when they're working properly.

TRVs seize, leak from the spindle, fail to close, or develop noisy juddering action as the internal mechanism wears. Old TRVs are particularly prone to seizing in summer when they sit fully open and aren't exercised by use.

Replacement is straightforward in most cases — we isolate the radiator, swap the valve head and body, refill and re-balance the system. Smart TRV upgrades (Drayton Wiser, Tado, Honeywell Evohome) allow individual room scheduling and integration with smart thermostats.

    Common TRV Faults

Faulty TRVs cost you money two ways: they fail to throttle flow when rooms reach temperature (wasted gas), and they sometimes leak slowly from the spindle (water on the floor and corroded valve bodies).

    • Seized TRVs are stuck fully open — the radiator never throttles down even when the room is hot
    • Leaking spindles drip slowly, often unnoticed until the carpet stains
    • Juddering or rattling TRVs usually have a worn pin mechanism
    • TRVs near hot radiators or in direct sun give false readings — sensor remote-mount helps
    • Old (pre-2000) TRVs sometimes contain asbestos in the head — we handle these safely

    Our Process

    1

    Diagnose

Identify which TRVs are faulty (seized, leaking, juddering) and quote for replacement. Standard or smart options discussed.

    2

    Isolate Radiator

Lockshield closed, TRV body removed under controlled drain. Water captured to avoid damage to flooring.

    3

    Fit New Valve

New TRV body and head fitted with fresh seals. Smart TRVs paired with the hub and tested before completion.

    4

    Refill & Vent

Radiator refilled, vented at the bleed point, system pressure restored to correct level.

    5

    Balance & Test

System balanced if multiple TRVs replaced. Each TRV tested through its range to confirm correct operation.

    Why Choose Conroy

    Quick Per-Radiator Swap

Single TRV replacement is typically 30 minutes per radiator. Whole-house swaps usually done in a day.

    Standard or Smart

Quality standard TRVs (Drayton, Pegler) or smart options (Drayton Wiser, Tado, Honeywell) — your choice.

    Re-Balance Included

When multiple TRVs replaced, we re-balance the system at no extra cost — see our radiator balancing service.

    Energy Savings

Smart TRVs typically save 10-25% on heating bills through room-by-room scheduling vs single-thermostat control.

    Workmanship Guaranteed

All TRV replacement work guaranteed on the workmanship — we stand behind every joint we make.

    Asbestos Awareness

Old TRV heads (pre-2000) sometimes contain asbestos — we identify and handle these safely per HSE guidance.

    Technical Detail

    Standard TRVs

Mechanical TRVs use a wax or liquid-filled capsule that expands with temperature, pushing a pin that throttles flow. Simple, reliable and inexpensive — typically £15-30 per valve plus fitting.

    Smart TRVs

Smart TRVs are battery-powered electronic valves controlled via a hub and smartphone app. They allow per-room scheduling (e.g. bedrooms warm only in the evening, bathroom warm only at morning shower time). Premium options like Honeywell Evohome support up to 12 zones.

    Compatibility with Boilers

Most smart TRV systems work with any boiler and existing controls. Some (Drayton Wiser, Tado X) also replace the main boiler thermostat, enabling 'load compensation' for better boiler efficiency.

    Removing Stuck TRV Heads

TRV heads sometimes seize onto the body. Patience, the right tools and (very rarely) heat are needed. We've never failed to remove one safely.

    Asbestos in Old TRV Heads

TRV heads made before 2000 occasionally contain asbestos in the temperature-sensing element. We identify these by manufacturer and date, and handle removal per HSE guidance.
