They're one of the biggest energy-saving fittings in any heating system — but only when they're working properly. TRVs seize, leak from the spindle, fail to close, or develop noisy juddering action as the internal mechanism wears. Old TRVs are particularly prone to seizing in summer when they sit fully open and aren't exercised by use.
