Why Tap Choice and Fitting Matters

A tap looks simple, but choosing the wrong one for your water system causes weak flow, noise and premature failure. High-pressure mixers behave poorly on gravity-fed hot water; cheap ceramic cartridges fail within a year on high-chlorine mains.

We advise on tap type before you buy, source quality fittings at trade prices if you'd like us to supply, and fit cleanly with proper isolators on the hot and cold supplies so future maintenance is a 5-minute job, not a half-day strip-out.

Most dripping taps can be repaired by replacing the cartridge or washer rather than fitting a new tap — saving you the cost of a replacement and reducing waste. We'll always quote both options.

Common Tap Problems and What They Mean

A dripping tap wastes around 5,500 litres of water a year — about £30 on a metered supply, and significantly more if it's the hot tap (you're also paying to heat the water that's draining away).

Other tap problems are warning signs: stiff handles often mean a worn cartridge that's about to fail entirely; juddering or banging is usually loose pipework or a failing valve; weak flow can indicate a blocked aerator or a tap mismatched to your water pressure.

    • A dripping hot tap can add £40-80 a year to your gas bill
    • Stiff handles usually mean ceramic cartridge wear, not a tap that needs replacing
    • Whistling taps are normally caused by a damaged washer or seat
    • No isolator valves under the basin means future repairs require draining the whole system
    • Limescale build-up shortens cartridge life significantly in hard water areas

    Technical Detail

    Tap Types Explained

Mixer taps blend hot and cold through a single spout — best for kitchens and modern bathrooms. Pillar taps have separate hot and cold outlets — traditional bathroom style. Monobloc taps mount through a single hole and are ideal for compact basins. Pull-out spray kitchen taps add flexibility for washing larger items.

    Pressure Compatibility

High-pressure mixer taps need a minimum 1.0-1.5 bar to work properly. Gravity-fed hot water systems (cold tank in loft, hot water cylinder) often only deliver 0.2-0.5 bar at upstairs basins. Fit the wrong tap and the cold runs fast while the hot dribbles. We check pressure before recommending.

    Ceramic Disc Cartridges

Modern mixer taps use ceramic disc cartridges instead of rubber washers. They give a quarter-turn action and last 5-10 years in normal use. When they fail, replacement cartridges are usually £15-30 — much cheaper than a new tap.

    Limescale and Hard Water

Bolton, Bury and Manchester have moderately hard water. Limescale shortens cartridge life and clogs aerators. Periodic descaling of the aerator and (in severe cases) a fitted water softener significantly extend tap life.

    Outside Tap Compliance

All outside taps must include a double-check valve or other approved backflow prevention to comply with the Water Supply Regulations. We fit these as standard — see our outside tap service.
