The Right Shower for Your Water System

A shower that's wrong for your water system is a daily frustration. A thermostatic mixer on a gravity-fed hot water cylinder will dribble; an electric shower undersized for your supply will fluctuate cold every time someone runs a tap; an unmatched pump can make a power shower deafeningly loud.

We assess your water pressure, hot water type (combi, unvented or gravity) and household demand before recommending a shower. Then we install it with proper isolators, secure brackets, neat tiling reinstatement where possible, and full commissioning before sign-off.

We also repair existing showers — failed cartridges, scaled-up heads, faulty solenoids on electric units, worn diverters — without immediately defaulting to a full replacement.

    Common Shower Problems Worth Solving

Most shower complaints — weak flow, fluctuating temperature, sudden cold blasts, low-pressure dribble — aren't the shower's fault. They're symptoms of the wrong shower for the system, or an installation that ignored basic plumbing rules.

    • Temperature jumping when a tap is run elsewhere usually means a non-thermostatic mixer or undersized supply
    • Weak flow from an electric shower is usually a blocked inlet filter or undersized cable/breaker
    • Scale build-up halves the life of cartridges and showerheads in hard water areas
    • Pumped power showers need correctly sized pumps — undersized = no flow, oversized = noise and wear
    • Mixer showers fed from gravity systems need a minimum 1m head and 22mm hot supply to work properly

    Technical Detail

    Electric Showers

Take cold water in and heat it instantly. Independent of your hot water system, so ideal when hot water is limited. Power ratings (8.5kW, 9.5kW, 10.5kW) determine flow — higher kW = warmer shower. Need a dedicated cable and RCBO.

    Manual Mixer Showers

Blend hot and cold from your existing supplies. Cheap to fit but temperature can fluctuate when other taps are used. Best on systems with steady pressure.

    Thermostatic Mixer Showers

Have a temperature-stable cartridge that compensates for pressure changes elsewhere in the house. The standard recommendation for safety and comfort, especially in family bathrooms.

    Power Showers

A mixer with a built-in pump, designed for gravity-fed systems. Provides high flow rate from a low-pressure source. Need correctly sized pipework and a power supply for the pump.

    Showers and Combi Boilers

Most combi boilers can support a single mixer shower comfortably. Running a second hot tap or shower at the same time will reduce flow and may chill the shower briefly. Higher-output boilers (32-42kW) handle this better.
