Why Every Modern Boiler Needs a Magnetic Filter

Central heating systems generate magnetite — a black, iron oxide sludge — as a natural by-product of corrosion inside steel radiators and cast-iron components. Magnetite circulates with the heating water, settles in the boiler heat exchanger, and clogs pumps and valves over time.

Magnetic filters trap this magnetite before it reaches the boiler. A simple, in-line fitting on the return pipework, the filter contains a powerful magnet that captures iron particles as the water passes through. Cleaning is a 5-minute annual job.

Most manufacturer warranties now require a magnetic filter on the system — fitting one isn't optional if you want your 10-year boiler warranty to stay valid. Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Baxi all specify this. We fit MagnaClean Professional 2 and Fernox TF1 Sigma as standard.

What Happens Without a Magnetic Filter

Magnetite gradually destroys the most expensive parts of your heating system. Boiler heat exchangers blocked with sludge fail prematurely. Pumps seize as iron particles clog the impeller. Diverter valves stick as sludge accumulates in the valve seat. All preventable with a £80-150 filter.

    • Magnetite accumulates in the boiler heat exchanger — the most expensive component to replace
    • Pumps seize and fail when sludge clogs the impeller bearings
    • Diverter valves and motorised valves stick as sludge fills the valve body
    • Radiators develop cold spots at the bottom as sludge settles
    • Annual filter cleaning takes 5 minutes — far cheaper than a £800 pump replacement

    Our Process

    1

    Survey

Choose teeing point on the return pipework as close to the boiler as practical. Confirm access for annual cleaning.

    2

    Isolate & Drain

System isolated, drained enough to allow cutting in to the return pipework. Floor protected.

    3

    Fit Filter

Tee fittings or filter-specific isolators installed. Filter mounted, magnet inserted, sealed and pressure-tested.

    4

    Refill & Add Inhibitor

System refilled, fresh inhibitor added (Sentinel X100 or Fernox F1 typical), pressurised and vented.

    5

    Test & Demonstrate

System fired up, filter operation confirmed, annual cleaning procedure demonstrated.

    Why Choose Conroy

    Boiler Protection

Captures magnetite before it reaches the heat exchanger — the single most effective protection against premature boiler failure.

    Warranty Compliant

Required by Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and others for full warranty cover. Fitted to manufacturer specification.

    Quick Install

Typical installation takes 60-90 minutes — quick gain for big long-term benefit.

    MagnaClean & Fernox TF1

Both market-leading brands stocked. We fit MagnaClean Professional 2 and Fernox TF1 Sigma as standard.

    5-Minute Annual Clean

Self-cleaning during operation; the magnet is removed and wiped annually — usually as part of the boiler service.

    Inhibitor Top-Up

Fresh chemical inhibitor added during installation — works with the filter to keep the system clean long-term.

    Technical Detail

    How They Work

Heating water passes through a chamber containing a powerful neodymium magnet. Magnetite particles are pulled out of suspension and stick to the magnet, leaving the water clean. Non-magnetic dirt is also caught by a particulate filter element.

    Filter Sizing & Location

Filters are sized to match the system flow rate — 22mm is standard for domestic systems. Always fitted on the return pipework (between system and boiler), as close to the boiler as practical.

    Annual Maintenance

Once a year (typically during the boiler service), the filter is closed off at the isolators and the magnet is removed. Sludge is wiped away with a cloth or flushed with the filter's drain valve. Takes 5-10 minutes.

    Compatibility with Existing Systems

Filters can be retrofitted to any wet central heating system. They work alongside power flushing — fitted immediately after a power flush, they capture any residual sludge and prevent re-accumulation.

    Inhibitor Chemistry

Chemical inhibitor (Sentinel X100, Fernox F1, Adey MC1+) works alongside the filter — the inhibitor stops new sludge forming, the filter captures any that does. Both are needed for long-term protection.
