Many are old, many are open-flue (drawing combustion air from the room), and many haven't been serviced in years. An annual service catches dangerous faults — particularly carbon monoxide problems — before they become incidents. Their burners and combustion characteristics drift over decades; their seals perish; their flue arrangements may not meet current standards. They need adequate room ventilation (often a permanent air vent) and a draught-tested flue. We confirm both. ### Balanced-Flue Fires Modern balanced-flue gas fires take air from outside and vent outside via a concentric flue. Safer than open-flue but still need annual servicing of burner, seals and flame supervision. ### Flueless Catalytic Fires Flueless fires (often referred to as 'gas log fires' or 'flueless gas fires') use a catalytic converter to consume combustion products. They have strict room volume and ventilation requirements which we verify at service. ### Thermocouples & FSDs The thermocouple senses the pilot flame and holds the gas valve open. When it fails, the fire won't stay lit. Modern fires use flame supervision devices (FSDs) doing the same job electronically. Both are common stock parts. ### Seals & Glass Decorative front glass and the seals around it are common failure points — perished seals allow combustion gases into the room.
