## Gas Cooker Installation — Done Legally and Safely

Connecting a gas cooker is, by law, work that only a Gas Safe registered engineer may carry out. The connection itself looks simple — flexible hose, bayonet — but the testing that should accompany it (gas tightness, flame supervision, stability) is what makes it safe.

We install freestanding cookers and full-width range cookers, supply and fit the correct bayonet or rigid connection, leak-test the full installation, and check flame condition on every burner. Where pipework needs extending, rerouting or upgrading (common with range cooker installations), we handle that too.

Old cooker supplies are capped off properly when removed — never just disconnected. Every installation comes with a written commissioning certificate.

## Why DIY or 'Cash Job' Cooker Installations Are Risky

A surprising number of gas cooker incidents trace back to non-Gas-Safe installations — usually a friend, a handyman, or the customer themselves connecting a new cooker without proper leak testing or pipe sizing checks. The cost saving is rarely worth the risk.

-   By law, only Gas Safe registered engineers may connect or disconnect gas cookers 
-   Wrong hose length or routing risks fire if the cooker is pushed against the wall 
-   Skipping the tightness test means undetectable slow leaks may develop 
-   Range cookers often need larger-bore gas supplies — fitting to undersized pipework starves the burners 
-   Old supplies left uncapped after appliance removal are a serious fire and explosion risk 

## Our Process

1

### Survey

Existing gas supply assessed — bayonet location, pipe size, isolation valve fitted? Range cookers checked for adequate gas flow.

2

### Old Cooker Removed

Existing cooker safely disconnected; old supply capped properly if not being reused, or extended/rerouted where the new cooker location differs.

3

### Connection

Correct bayonet or rigid connection fitted, with appropriate hose type and length. Stability bracket fitted on bayonet installations as required.

4

### Tightness Test

Full gas tightness test of the installation including the new cooker connection — confirms no leaks anywhere on the system.

5

### Commissioning

Each burner tested for flame condition, flame supervision device operation confirmed, oven and grill checked, certificate issued.

## Technical Detail

### Bayonet vs Rigid

Bayonet connections allow the cooker to be pulled out for cleaning behind. They use a flexible hose and a wall-mounted bayonet socket with isolation. Rigid connections are used for built-in cookers or where bayonet isn't practical.

### Hose Length & Routing

Flexible hoses must be the correct length (usually 1m) and routed to avoid pinching, kinking or contact with hot surfaces. We check this carefully — most issues we find on existing cookers relate to hose routing.

### Stability Brackets

Freestanding cookers must have a stability bracket or chain to prevent tipping if children climb on the open oven door. We fit these as standard on every freestanding installation.

### Range Cookers and Pipe Sizing

High-output range cookers (60kW+) need 22mm gas supply minimum to avoid pressure drop. Many older installations have 15mm pipework which starves the burners — we upgrade where required.

### Old Gas Points

Disused gas supplies (old back boilers, removed gas fires) must be properly capped at the meter or last accessible point. We come across uncapped points regularly — they're a serious risk.
