What to Do When a Pipe Bursts — and How We Fix It

A burst pipe is one of the most damaging plumbing emergencies a home can suffer. Within minutes, hundreds of litres of water can escape into ceilings, walls and floors, causing thousands of pounds of damage before the supply is shut off.

Our first priority on arrival is containment: we isolate the supply at the stopcock or affected zone valve, drain down the system to stop further escape, and assess the damage. We then carry out a permanent repair — copper, plastic or compression, whatever is appropriate for the pipe and location — not a temporary clamp or tape that will fail again in weeks.

We carry common pipe sizes, fittings and isolation valves on every van, so the vast majority of burst pipes are repaired on the first visit. We also document the cause where useful for your insurance claim.

Why a Temporary Fix Will Cost You More

Some plumbers will arrive, clamp the leak, and leave you with a 'repair' that's destined to fail the next time pressure spikes. A permanent repair means cutting out the damaged section and installing new pipework that's properly supported, jointed and pressure-tested before we leave.

    • Frozen pipes burst as water expands inside them — most common in lofts and exterior walls
    • A single burst can release 400+ litres an hour at mains pressure
    • Insurance claims often require evidence of a permanent repair, not a clamp
    • Hidden leaks behind plasterboard can rot timber and cause mould within days
    • Old lead and steel pipework is far more prone to bursting than modern copper or plastic

    Our Process

    1

    Isolate & Contain

On arrival we shut off the supply, drain the affected section, and stop further water escape — minimising secondary damage.

    2

    Locate the Burst

We trace the exact failure point, exposing pipework only where necessary. Hidden leaks are pinpointed with acoustic or thermal kit if required.

    3

    Permanent Repair

We cut out the damaged section and install new copper or plastic pipework with properly jointed, supported and pressure-tested connections.

    4

    Pressure Test

Before we leave, we re-pressurise the system and check every joint to confirm the repair is fully watertight.

    5

    Documentation

We provide a written invoice describing the failure and repair — useful for your home insurance claim.

    Technical Detail

    First Steps Before We Arrive

If you can, turn off the water at the internal stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and open all cold taps to drain the system. Turn off the central heating. If water is near electrics, switch off the consumer unit. Move valuables and lift rugs.

    Why Pipes Burst

The most common cause is frost — water expanding inside a frozen pipe creates pressure that splits the wall, but the leak only appears when the ice melts. Other causes include corrosion of older steel or lead pipework, mechanical damage during DIY, and ground movement on buried supply pipes.

    Frozen Pipe Prevention

Insulate all exposed pipework in lofts, garages and outbuildings. Keep the heating on a low setting during prolonged cold snaps. If you're away in winter, leave the heating at 12-15°C or drain the system entirely.

    Insurance Considerations

Most home insurance policies cover 'escape of water' including the repair of the pipe and the damage caused. Keep our invoice — it documents the cause and the permanent fix. Take photos of damage before any clean-up.

    Hidden Bursts

Not all bursts are obvious. Sudden high water bills, damp patches on walls or ceilings, low pressure, or the sound of running water with no taps open are all signs of a hidden leak. We use acoustic and thermal detection to find them without unnecessary damage.
