Boiler Breakdown — Fast Response, First-Visit Fix

A boiler breakdown in January isn't an inconvenience — it's a real problem, particularly with young children, elderly relatives or vulnerable family members in the house. Our emergency boiler service runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Phil takes the call directly (no call centre), travels in a fully-stocked van carrying the common spares for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal and Glow-worm, and diagnoses the fault on arrival. The vast majority of breakdowns are repaired on the first visit.

Where a specialist part is needed (a brand-specific PCB or fan), we source it as a priority — usually within 24 hours — and return to complete the repair. In the meantime, we leave you with a clear diagnosis and a written quote.

    The Most Common Winter Breakdowns

Most winter boiler failures are caused by a small number of recurring issues — almost all of them preventable with proper annual servicing. Knowing the symptoms helps you describe the fault clearly when you call.

    • No heating but hot water works — usually a failed diverter valve or motorised valve
    • Boiler losing pressure repeatedly — usually a leak somewhere on the system or a failed expansion vessel
    • Boiler locking out with a fault code — could be flow sensor, fan, ignition or pressure switch
    • Pilot light keeps going out — usually a thermocouple or flame-sensing electrode (older boilers)
    • Frozen condensate pipe in cold weather — boiler locks out, needs thawing and lagging

    Honest Replace-or-Repair Advice

If the boiler isn't worth repairing, we'll tell you straight — no padding bills on a unit you should replace.

    Technical Detail

    Frozen Condensate Pipes

The most common winter cold-snap call. The condensate pipe outside the boiler freezes, the boiler locks out with a 1F or similar fault. Thawing with warm (not boiling) water restores operation; lagging the pipe prevents recurrence.

    Loss of Pressure

Most modern boilers need 1.0-1.5 bar pressure. Pressure drops slowly over time as small amounts of air escape; a sudden drop indicates a leak. Repressurising buys time; finding the leak is the proper fix.

    Lockouts and Fault Codes

Modern boilers display fault codes (e.g. Worcester EA, Vaillant F.75) that point straight to the failed component. We carry manufacturer documentation for all major brands and diagnose from the code on arrival.

    Diverter & Motorised Valves

If you have hot water but no heating (or vice versa), it's almost always a failed diverter valve (combi) or motorised valve (system/heat-only). Common failure, common stock part.

    When Repair Doesn't Make Sense

Boilers over 12-15 years old with multiple failed components are usually beyond economic repair. We'll quote both repair and replacement so you can decide — see our boiler replacement service.
