Air Source Heat Pumps — Done Properly
An air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat from outside air (even at -15°C) and uses it to heat your home and hot water at 300-400% efficiency. Done well, it cuts heating carbon emissions to a fraction of a gas boiler and qualifies for £7,500 grant funding under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Done badly, it's a nightmare — noisy, expensive to run, and unable to keep the house warm in cold weather. The difference is almost entirely in the survey and design: heat loss calculation, radiator sizing, pipework sizing and flow temperature optimisation.
We carry out full heat loss surveys to MCS standard, design systems that genuinely work at low flow temperatures (the key to efficient ASHP operation), and handle the BUS grant application on your behalf. Vaillant aroTHERM, Daikin Altherma and Mitsubishi Ecodan systems supplied and installed.
Real Work Examples

Why So Many Heat Pump Installations Fail
Heat pumps work best at low flow temperatures (35-50°C) — far below the 70-80°C a gas boiler runs at. If radiators are sized for boiler temperatures and the pump is asked to run them at boiler temperatures, efficiency collapses, running costs balloon and the house never gets warm.
- Undersized radiators force the pump to run at high flow temperatures — efficiency crashes
- Inadequate insulation makes the heat loss too large for sensible heat pump sizing
- Cheap or undersized cylinders limit hot water performance
- Poor commissioning leaves weather compensation off — pump runs hot regardless of outside temperature
- Lack of design experience leads to incorrect refrigerant pipework and system imbalance
Our Process
Free Initial Visit
Site assessment — likely heat pump position, electrical capacity, hot water demand, existing radiators and insulation level.
Heat Loss Survey
Full room-by-room MCS heat loss calculation. Radiator audit. Hot water cylinder sizing. Quote based on actual system design.
BUS Grant Application
We handle the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant application on your behalf — £7,500 deducted from your final bill.
Installation
Typically 3-5 days: outdoor unit set on concrete pads, indoor unit installed, hot water cylinder fitted (where required), pipework, electrics and controls.
Commissioning & Handover
Full commissioning to MCS standard — weather compensation set, system balanced, controls configured. Two-year workmanship warranty plus manufacturer warranty registered.
Why Choose Conroy
£7,500 BUS Grant
Eligible heat pumps qualify for £7,500 off the install cost under the government Boiler Upgrade Scheme — we handle the application.
MCS-Quality Install
Heat loss surveyed properly, radiators sized for low flow temperatures, system genuinely efficient — not box-ticking.
Quality Brands
Vaillant aroTHERM, Daikin Altherma, Mitsubishi Ecodan — only proven, supported manufacturers.
Lower Running Costs
Properly designed systems often run cheaper than gas — particularly with off-peak electricity tariffs.
Carbon Reduction
Typical heat pump installation cuts heating CO₂ emissions by 70-80% vs gas boiler with current grid mix.
Long Service Life
Modern heat pumps have 20-25 year design life — significantly longer than a typical gas boiler.
Technical Detail
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
BUS provides £7,500 grants for air source heat pump installations in England and Wales (subject to property eligibility). We're MCS-accredited and handle the application — you see the discount applied to your final bill.
Heat Loss Calculation
Every room is calculated for heat loss at design outside temperature (typically -3°C in our region). This sets the heat pump capacity and confirms whether existing radiators need upgrading.
Radiator Sizing
Heat pumps work best at flow temperatures of 35-50°C — well below boiler temperatures. Many existing radiators need upgrading to maintain output at lower flow temperatures. We confirm this during survey.
Hot Water Cylinder
ASHPs work with unvented hot water cylinders (typically 210L+ for a family home). Cylinders are sized larger than for gas systems because reheat is slower.
Noise Considerations
Modern heat pumps are quiet (40-50 dB at 1m) but planning rules limit boundary noise. We assess proposed position against MCS noise calculation and Permitted Development criteria.
